background
In 1638, the first governor, Jacques du Parquet, ordered it to be built on a volcanic rock in the swamp to restore the king and protect the large bay. In 1669, the port and town of Fort-Royal was founded. The ships had to be taken to land to unload. In 1676, General Governor Marquis de Bass-Castelmore moved his headquarters in Saint-Pierre to the strategically convenient bay of Fort-Royal. His successor, the count of Blénac Charles de Bourbon, began draining the coastal strip by laying a wide drainage barrier in the area of today's Général de Gaulle. In 1681, the town had grown to become an administrative capital. After the seven-year war, Capuchin monks were allowed to set up a school for boys and girls between today's town hall and the palace of justice.
During the French Revolution, the place was renamed Fort-la-Republique. Napoleon's personal decree gave rise to the current name.
During the reign of King Louis-Philippe (1830-1848) the place was considerably expanded. The newly founded Compagnie Générale Transatlantique set up its coal storage facilities here.
Fort-de-France was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake in January 1839, and a large fire raged in June 1890. In August of the following year there was another severe cyclone.
After the volcanic eruption in 1902 completely destroyed the ancient capital of Saint-Pierre by lava and ash dust, the village exploded into the economic and cultural center of the island. The population doubled from 27,000 in 1902 to 180,000 in 1985 over a period of approximately 25 years. Behind the town center were the working districts of Morne Pichevin, Sainte-Thérèse and Trénelle. On the slopes you will find the better residential areas of Balata, Bellevue, Didier and Redoute.
Fort-de-France is now one of the largest cities in the Caribbean. Because the city is built on several hills, there are only a few main roads between the neighborhoods, which are regularly clogged during the periods of commercial traffic. In times of strikes, they are easily blocked by protesters.
